Joomla is a No-Brainer in America's Brainiest Cities

I saw a reference the other day to a list that was compiled a while back of "America's Brainiest Cities." It consists of those cities with over 250,000 people which have the highest concentration of college grads. I'm particularly interested in the adoption curve for new technologies like Joomla, and that list got me thinking . . . "I bet there's a pretty high correlation between having a lot of highly educated people and having a lot of people interest in Joomla."

It only took me a few minutes to discover that there is, indeed, a strong interest in Joomla in many of America's brainiest cities. Here is a list of those cities, with a link to user groups in those cities, where available:

Seattle, WA
San Francisco, CA
Raleigh, NC
Washington, DC
Austin TX
Minneapolis, MN
Atlanta, GA
Boston, MA
San Diego, CA
Lexington-Fayette, KY
Denver, CO
Charlotte, NC
Portland, OR
St. Paul, MN - see above under Minneapolis
San Jose, CA - see above under San Francisco
Colorado Springs, CO
Honolulu, HI
Oakland, CA - see above under San Francisco
Pittsburgh, PA
New York, NY
Albuquerque, NM
Anchorage, AK
Omaha, NE
Nashville-Davidson, TN
Columbus, OH
New Orleans, LA

Many of the remaining cities have one or more major Joomla web development firms, and/or have Joomla groups that are in the process of formation.

Prediction: Twelve months from now, it will go without saying that every single one of these cities will have a strong Joomla user group!

Have I left anyone out? Please let me know by responding to this post with contact info for other Joomla groups that have formed in the cities listed above, or any other US cities, for that matter . . . .

PS - see my separate post on Joomla in America's 50 Biggest Cities.

There's plenty of interest in Joomla in small towns, too
written by Jen Kramer McKibben, October 29, 2008
Joomla! User Group New England (www.joomlausergroup.net) was founded in March 2008 in the bustling metropolis of Brattleboro, VT, population roughly 10,000. The entire state of Vermont had a little over 600,000 people in 2000 -- less than some of these major cities you cite.

Brattleboro is an interesting small town in that we have three colleges/universities located there (Community College of Vermont, Marlboro College Graduate Center, School for International Training), as well as satellite campuses for others (University of Vermont, Union College).

20 miles away in Keene, NH (pop. 22,000), there are yet more schools (Keene State College, Antioch, NH Technical College). So although we're "small town", we're pretty well educated overall.

Since we were founded, our mailing list has grown from 2 to 75 members, with more joining each week. We routinely have some people drive 1-2 hours (that's 60-120 miles, not a lot of traffic here) to come to our meetings. Typically we get 12-20 people to our meetings, which are 5:30-7 PM on the 3rd Wed of the month.

4Web, Inc. (www.4webinc.com) was founded in Jan 2008 and is one of the major Joomla developers in the area. Barrie North, who lives 1 1/2 hrs north of us and occasionally comes to our meetings, runs JoomlaShack, Compass Designs, and SimplWeb out of his office in Norwich, VT. We also have a pile of freelancers who are learning Joomla or are quite competent at it (particularly Barb Ackemann of www.irislines.com and Meg McCarthy of www.megmccarthy.com). Finally, the University of Massachusetts Extension in Amherst, MA (40 mi south of Brattleboro), has done some amazing things with Joomla on their sites -- www.umassextension.org.

Joomla is everywhere!

Big Cities, Small Towns, In-between
written by Joe Scarry, October 29, 2008
Thanks for adding that perspective, Jen! It's particularly interesting to me because we're located in Evanston, a city of 70,000 just north of Chicago, and home of Northwestern and the Kellogg B-school. We grew out of a tech incubator in Evanston, and we have some of the same kind of networking and cross-pollination opportunities here that you are talking about.

Look forward to talking with you more about this in Denver!

Love the headline, Joe-not-the-plumber.

We're at a point where we max out every month in Chicago. Wonder if it's time to add an evening meeting out in the burbs.
