User Management System 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
|
I am looking for a simple user management system to keep tack of some basic user/group member information. Is Community Builder the way to go? I don't need all of the functionality of this component, but I know that it will do what I need. Also, is there a module which allows you to download the user information into Excel? Thanks

I know that granular user and group permissions are not part of the Joomla! core, and I am unfortunately unfamiliar with which extensions may fulfill this need, especially for Joomla 1.5. I'd recommend checking out http://extensions.joomla.org and digging through what's available. Be sure to read the reviews, and check the forums/wiki for blacklisted third-party extensions.
I do know that this is a major user feature request that has been acknowledged by the core team. You may want to keep an eye on Joomla 1.6 development in case they decide to roll permissions into this release ...

I find it's all or nothing, so far - great question. CB is inexpensive as a commercial piece of software, but bottom line is, it can accommodate you as the site grows...
HOWEVER, CB is not yet 1.5 native. I'm not qualified to say whether running it in Legacy Mode is a smart move, hopefully someone else jumps in and can answer that one.
Amanda Westbrooks? Ed Swiderski? Those two members - you should ping them and ask them to come share their insights on the above, as well as your question about importing from Excel.
I use RSForme for forms, by the way, which does allow saving/exporting/opening in Excel. RSForme is not a User Group management component though...There's my 2-cents.

Just got this today that is direct quote from Beat who is the lead developer of Community Builder.
"CB 1.2 will be native Mambo 4.5.2, 4.5.3, 4.5.4, 4.5.5, 4.6.3, 4.6.4, and native Joomla 1.0 and 1.5.1 very most probably in the next days (making good progress)."
If you can hold out for a few more days they should have a new "native" release available.

I stumbled acres this today looking for something else.
It talks about excel exports.
I cannot say is it is good or not.
It is called "JoomSuite User"

Thanks for the responses so far. I have learned a lot about forms and user manager components. I would like to use Community Builder because I like the way it interacts with the forum on this site. However, I need a way to view and sort the user data. I could use Excel for these functions, but I am not sure how to download the data.

A year or two ago I played with CB UsersList XTD
If you take a look at it let us know what it currently does and what you think.

If all else fails, I believe the User Data is stored in the MySQL database in the backend. I believe you could go in through PHP Admin and do a data dump of the CB user table. You should be able to dump it to CSV and then load it into MS Access or Excel, depending on the size of the file (# of rows). Excel in older version has a limit of 65535 rows.
Failing that, I haven't found any component or extension that allows you to view or download the CB data files. If I find one, I'll post an answer here.
