Coming in from the Near North 7 Months ago
Hi everyone!

I have just recently started to look into Joomla! thanks to a contact in Arizona. I am beginning to work with her in furthering development in an idea she has based around Joomla!. I am new to Joomla! and CMS, but have had some minor experience with MS Sharepoint. From what I can tell, Joomla! is far better than MS Sharepoint.

I come from a background in a mix of programming and business intelligence. I've been doing consulting work and a government gig for the last 9 years. I've been transitioning back to the work force since Sept 2007 when I left my last job. Okay, I am unemployed. I hope to find a job soon enough and perhaps the Arizona work will turn into my job. Time will tell with that one, but it's a good venture and I hope to see it through to completion.

As to other parts of my life, I am not a native Chicagoan. I grew up in North Carolina. I went to college there and started my first job there before transferring to Chicago in 1998. I've been happy ever since with the move, even with the brutal winters. I wouldn't go back now unless there was no choice.

I get into Model Trains (n-gauge) and computer web design and support as a hobby. I have started up a small business around the design and support stuff, but it hasn't taken off yet. I also get into some tennis and bike riding, but not heavily. I also go for classical concerts both at the CSO Symphony Center, Millenium Park, and at Ravinia.

Okay, guess that's enough about me. I'm looking forward to my first JC meeting on May 14 and the EXPO on May 16. I think it will be a great learning experience.

Welcome, Kendall! Great that you're here. Let folks know what career you're seeking too - There are several folks looking for help that are members.

Also, if you want to post links to any of your sites, that'd be great too, to see what your background is, and invite some constructive feedback. There are lots of fantastic folks here in the group that I'm sure can be of help to you as well.

What comes around goes around!

Re:Coming in from the Near North 6 Months, 1 Week ago
Well, I'm taking John's advice and posting a bit more about my career and myself.
Until late last year, I had worked at 2 places for 9 years. I worked as a consultant for a firm out of Skokie, IL. I worked heavily with Business Objects reporting as well as database design and database work. I mostly wrote reports and designed universes and helped gather requirements.

I then shifted into municipal government and worked for the City of Chicago. I did a lot of MS Access development and more reporting. I did some database stuff, but not a lot. I decided to shift gears in my career. Afte a few months, I decided to shift gears and started looking at a different career path.

Right now, I'm exploring Joomla! and CMS systems. I've got a small computer business where I do installation help and some web design. Right now, I don't have a portfolio other than my own site I"m working on in Joomla! and one or two others I designed or maintain. They are standard designs, but it's web design none the less

If any of you guys are looking for assistance and are able to hire on a contract basis, I'd love to speak with you. I'm basically looking for some work in this field or even in the database field at this point. I'd like to get into being an all-around web designer and can learn how to do a lot of stuff. Right now, I'd say I could learn about anytyhing except how to do the pretty stuff. I cant draw!

Get in touch with me at kendall @ joomlacoaching.com if you are interested in discussing anything further. I'll discuss potential situations and give you an honest answer as to my abilities and if I have time to get involved with your project.
