Can we make Joomla Security 101 an upcoming meeting topic 9 Months, 1 Week ago
sorry for the heart, it's VDay.

Would love to see a joomla security overview at an upcoming meeting.

Really enjoyed yesterday's meeting and MC and PK's SEO talk.

Yes we have already got this on our list of monthly learning topics. We are going to be putting together a schedule that lists the topics and possibly the presenters of these topics shortly. I spoke with Tom Canavan (AKA vscribe) who is going to be speaking at our Joomla Day event. I mentioned to him last night that we are going to be scheduling a security topic for one of our monthly meetings. He offered to fly in from Texas to present security to our group. HOW AWESOME!

Howdy Ya'll,

I haven't committed a 'date' yet, but I have (as Mike said) committed to Mike to come up on a regular meeting and present security.

Since that's kind of a broad and deep topic, I would love to hear some feedback on what parts of security you may want to hear about.

Thank you

Tom Canavan

You guys read my mind! I was just coming here to post that same question. A security topic would be great!

1) Securing files after install. Should we be worried about any thing?
2) Secuirty with respect to add-ohns
3) Security patching from joomla. Something patching breaks stuff. Best practices.
4) Overall walk through of keeping a joomla site sequred.
5) How to test secuirty or hack your own site
6) Any query string issues we should watch out for.

Kinda rambled those off the top of my head. I'm a newbie so if some of that didn't make sense, I'm sorry.

Sounds great! In fact, those topics are near and dear to my heart, cause I have a commercial offering about to launch to help folks with those kind of things!

I'll make sure I cover those topics! - Thanks and keep the suggestions coming!

I'm always nervous about security. We are getting ready to launch some commercial business sites and we are always watching for hackers. Any way to pen test or try to hack our own sites to test for faults?

Just FYI:

I'm ALL FOR "shameless plugs," for folks who are believers in Joomla!

We have a couple commercial joomla sites we would be interested in getting 'security audited'

1) Does Tom offer that service? What's the cost range?

2)"Perform a Joomla Security Audit" might be good framework for presenting joomla security overview. It would be nice to have a checklist that could be integrated into the standard jooomla build plan.

We just hired Tom to do his thing for JoomlaChicago, working with Phil DeKoker, Chicago's TOP GUN administrator.

I know I sound like I'm full of too many accolades, but folks, when I find a great solution, I don't shut up - I TELL others!

I think it's great that Tom is willing to come in and talk about security. It was a toss between his Sat. Joomla U class and the Joomla Extension Development. I ended up taking the Extensions class but really wanted to change my mind after hearing Tom speak on Friday.

I am freelancing for another area company that is developing a few Joomla sites. They have their own Webmaster and server. I hope they know what they are doing.

I am still trying to find the how to security fix for the .htaccess file.

Anybody have that link handy?

Thanks again for a great event. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hello,

Thank you for attending my class - I will get my schedule in order to return to your user meeting later this year.

In the meantime - joomlarescue.com is always on!

Thanks again
