I love Meetup! 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Meetup is great! I love it! There is no compare, especially for setting up a moms group.

However, there are certain problems... such as the search function on the messageboards being severely lacking.

I would love it if there were a Joomla extension available that had the option of e-mailing reminders of events out to everyone, and an option for people to RSVP to events. I have seen something sort of like it in a phpbulletin model (but without the reminders), but it's not quite what I'm looking for. So let me know if any of you ever come across something like what Meetup has, as far as RSVP & reminder options.

Re: signups/rsvps: The Joomla Chicago site uses Registration Pro - developed by Mike Carson, one of the founders of the group. It is a very serious tool for managing events and keeping track of who's coming. You can contact Mike at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Can you say more about what you like about Meetup? I've never used it . . . I'm wondering if we should use it for promoting our Joomla events . . . we also have some very informal tech get-togethers here in Evanston . . . . what are the pros and cons?

You should definitely use it to promote your Joomla events. Meetup is getting more and more popular, and almost always places at the top of Google searches, so even if you make this group here the "main" group and use the Meetup group as a pointer to here, it would be worth the cost (which is $12-19 a month, depending on the payment plan). It has a great calendar setting, and administrators (Organizers) can check the option to send out reminder e-mails. Meetup can categorize the reminders according to who has RSVP'd "No," "Maybe," "Yes," and those who haven't RSVP'd at all.

The downside is that the messageboard is from the Dark Ages, there is the monthly cost, and one can't choose the option to NOT receive reminder e-mails.

As far as your informal Evanston tech get-togethers, because of the cost associated with Meetup, I don't know if I can recommend it, unless the members are willing to shell out a couple bucks. If they are willing, then yes, I would give it a try for a month or two and see what you think.

Joe, we've got 49 or more members of Meetup.com now, for JoomlaChicago. Talk to Robert - he's in there too.

It's a great site to keep in touch with what's going on all over the US / World.

I use Registration Pro right now. I HIGHLY recommend it. Great for reminders. It's got room for some improvement, but it's miles ahead of any other Joomla extension out there.

Mike's working on version 3.0, and we're a beta tester for it.
