Stats programs kill website speed 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago
I recently discovered the web traffic statistic components really slow down a joomla website.
I was using joomlawatch and my webtraffic has been picking up, but it was taking my site forever to load. Even after I reduced the data stored from 365 days to 14. After I deleted the program, the speed came back to near normal.
I did some research and found many web developers DO NOT recommend using a web based stats component. Instead, I use the server based Webalizer to determine stats. This comes with cpanel.
(Thanks to Mike Carson for pointing this out to me.)

I've seen more people heading to Google Analytics and the Google Webmaster tools. They know Google is the leader in search engines, so people want to use their tools. My guess is that if you optimize for Google, you are likely going to have some good optimization for other search engines as well. The stats are needed to help with that as well, so having them all with GA helps with other aspects of your site.
I know that many providers using CPanel or HSphere offer stats programs within the hosting account free of charge. It isn't geared towards SEO exactly, but you could use that if you aren't ready to head for Google yet.
Tom, Same thing happened with me. We removed the statistics program from our site, and zzzzinggg! You know, people forget that through CPanel, people can see stat's too.
