After installing J1.5 index.php displays Restricted access 9 Months, 1 Week ago
I am not sure if that's the right forum for problems but here it is.

I setup a new Linux test box to install Joomla 1.5.1, everything went fine with the default settings, site was up and running. The next day when I opened it it just says "Restricted access" but I can get in to the admin area.

I can't display anything using the hostname, localhost or the IP address, it is stuck on "Restricted access" is it a possible problem with Joomla or LAMP settings?

I can display .html files, and info.php, to further troubleshoot the problem I enabled/disabled SEO, renamed .htaccess file and it still didn't work.
I replaced original index.php with my info.php and it opened up without any problems.
index.php has 666 permission.

Code:

Turning on debugging does not produce any data, how do I fix the problem? Is it OS related or Joomla?

Thanks.

Many varables.

Start by installing and running this? http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1146/Itemid,35/

If the above link is broke search the tools section of joomla extensions website for a tool called “Joomla Diagnostics “.

I recommend removing this tool when done.

Read about it. I assume the 1.5 version of the tool can be used for 1.5.1.

It looks like a nice component, however when I went to the admin section, clicked on "Extension" "Install/Uninstall" it displayed "restricted access" page. I am able to view any other submenu under the "Extensions" menu.

Its a tool and not an extension so you cannot install it using the joomla installer.
You need to FTP the files to you joomla's installation directory.
then execute the file through you browser by url: www.yoursite.com/diagnostics.php

It may not know the correct lengths of joomla 1.5.1 so it will more than likely give you all warnings.

So, the tool may not work for joomla 1.5.1.

Here are two more tool sets. Just look for them in the joomla extension site.

Joomla! Tools Suite (JTS) and Joomla! Health, Installation, Security Audit (HISA)

Always do your homework before putting any program on your server. Make sure you follow the directions and remove these tools from your server when done.

Most important, always make backups before and after your changes including the use of these tools.

The tool reported many corrupted files, I ended up reinstalling J1.5 and it seems to be working OK so far.

Thanks for the tool.

When finished using the tool remember to either protect the tools from outside access or delete them.
We do not want hackers to have access to them.

Re:After installing J1.5 index.php displays Restricted access 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Jarek,

Glad to hear that you resolved your issue. I ran into the same problem a while back. I'm guessing you ran some kind of backup utility locally and tried to install that. I use joomlapack. The problem had to do with the admin login details. When I installed it on my server using the localhost backup I had changed the username and password. However the database brought over from localhost kept that old username and password. When you try to access a page that you don't have access to it dies out, displaying the message "Restricted Access". If it is not your username/password combo that is killing you, it is the configuration.php file. The paths are probably still set to your local. The best thing to do when installing Joomla on a server after developing it locally using something like JSAS is the following:

1. Create the back up using joomlapack (sometimes this can be a chore in itself, so just keep trying if it fails on you)
2. Download the backup zip file and extract it to your local machine
3. FTP all of the files and folders over to your server except the configuration.php
4. Follow the install process making sure you use your new MySQL database.

Your MySQL database should be previously set up and you should know your host, table name, database name, and password.

Once installed delete the installation folder from your server and you are all set. Post back if you ever get the issues again.
