Download Management Extension
Discussion started by Glen Kato , on 27 July 05:22 PM

I'm looking for a file download management system for my Joomla site.  I don't want to charge for the downloads but I must have user register before they can get the files.  The most important element is having the ability to track who had downloaded what.

I need to be able to download ( or easily copy ) the users email and name to be placed in a database.  The premise is that the users emails are on file in case the files they downloaded have changed.  The user would be emailed to download the newest version.

I tried Dioscouri Ambra but that does not track free downloads.

Hi Glen:

I think this is more of a function of Joomla's user system and access control levels than what's set in DocMan. In other words, you should use Joomla's Global Configuration to set your user self-registration options, publish Joomla's login/register module (and/or a menu link to User Registration) to let users sign themselves up, then create a menu item that points toward DocMan with a permission level of "Registered."

Regular users won't be able to see that DocMan link when browsing the site, but registered, logged-in users will be able to.

Hi Kendall,

I just started playing around with the newest release of Docman. It looks really great but I don't see an option for self registration of users. I want user to simply be able to sign up and then download. I'm sure there is a plug-in for this but just haven't found it yet. I think the sticking point is that the downloads are free. If I charged, I could plug into some type of shopping cart.

I'll keep everyone posted on how I do with this.

Glen,

I use Docman. It has tracking ability and you can even setup specific groups of registered users. You can also do public versus private downloads as well if you need to offer files privately as well as publicly.
